None of them fully captures the stupendous nature of the event: In Christmas, we celebrate the truth of God taking on human form, and beginning to live among His creation in order to save us all from the evil that so quickly overtakes us. Christmas is the story of an infant who rescues the cosmos. Christmas is a missional story…”for God so loved the world, that he sent his one and only Son…”
2009 has been a year of hope and struggle for Madison Street Church. We are still doing the needed paperwork to confirm our name change and incorporation and change our bank accounts, yada, yada, yada. We are still working on the incorporation of our community development ministry. We are still seeking to finalize the process of refinancing our church mortgage, launching our community development ministry with sufficient startup capital, and resolving our property tax issues. We continue to be in the midst of a church name change, corporate documentation, and seemingly endless conversation about the status of property. We have also endured continued economic downturn with resultant job losses and furloughs. Perhaps the image describing many of us is fatigue. We come to this Christmas week struggling…and maybe a little tired. Maybe a lot tired.
In our fatigue, we do well to recall how the ancient church celebrated worship every Sunday with the liturgical formula: Christ has come! Christ has risen! Christ will come again! Therein is the good news, here is the resounding image: Christ has come. God’s love completely demonstrated. God’s Shalom completely embodied. Christ has come. The gift is real, and no matter what else is going on in our lives to paint the day as bleak and burdensome, the truth is…Christ has come. Does anything else ultimately matter?
I wish I could say 2010 will be all sweetness and light for the world, for our economy, and for our church. I do not know. Being the happy pessimist that I am, all I can say with confidence as we ready our hearts for Christmas is: Christ has come! And that is enough for today.
